Overview

Umm Gamar

Umm Gamar, "Mother of the Moon", is a small, steep-sided reef north of Hurghada. The profile is compact and dramatic: the reef rises abruptly from a sandy base at 28–32m, and the walls on all sides carry some of the best coral in the immediate Hurghada area.

The reef runs roughly north–south, no more than 200m long and 80m across. The north face drops most steeply, a near-vertical wall from the reef crest at 5–8m to a sandy base at 30m, draped in gorgonian fans and soft coral with anthias in clouds. There is a long cave and overhang section at 18–22m on the northeast corner: lionfish at the entrance, glassfish inside, moray eels in the recesses.

The south face is gentler, with a stepped reef and coral garden from 10m to 20m, popular for the second dive when current has picked up on the north face or when visibility favours the shallower topography. Napoleon wrasse are reliably present on both faces.

In summer, the water temperature rises and current increases, the site becomes more challenging but visibility often peaks. In winter, calmer conditions and better light on the upper wall make Umm Gamar an excellent morning dive before the day-trip boats arrive.

What you need to know

North wall current
The north face is exposed to the prevailing current. On a running day it can be strong enough to make the descent difficult. Check conditions before committing to the north wall, the south face is always a workable alternative.
South face
The south side is consistently sheltered. If the north wall is too challenging, the south garden dive from 10–20m is a rewarding alternative with equivalent marine life density.
Cave overhang
The northeast cave at 18–22m is a penetration section. Torchlight is required. Do not enter without a dive torch and without briefing from the guide on the cave extent.
Mooring
Umm Gamar has established mooring buoys on both faces. Anchor drops on the reef are not required. Ascend from below the mooring and do your safety stop on the line.
Minimum: Advanced Open WaterRequired for the north wall depth. The south face coral garden is accessible to confident OW divers, but the north wall and cave section require AOW.
⚠️
Torch required for caveThe northeast cave is dark at depth. A primary dive torch is required. Do not rely on ambient light, you will not see the moray eels or the glassfish without it.
Good visibility year-roundUmm Gamar is set away from the inshore turbidity that affects some Hurghada sites. Visibility is consistently good and peaks in summer on the north face.
