Umm Gamar
Umm Gamar, "Mother of the Moon", is a small, steep-sided reef north of Hurghada. The profile is compact and dramatic: the reef rises abruptly from a sandy base at 28–32m, and the walls on all sides carry some of the best coral in the immediate Hurghada area.
The reef runs roughly north–south, no more than 200m long and 80m across. The north face drops most steeply, a near-vertical wall from the reef crest at 5–8m to a sandy base at 30m, draped in gorgonian fans and soft coral with anthias in clouds. There is a long cave and overhang section at 18–22m on the northeast corner: lionfish at the entrance, glassfish inside, moray eels in the recesses.
The south face is gentler, with a stepped reef and coral garden from 10m to 20m, popular for the second dive when current has picked up on the north face or when visibility favours the shallower topography. Napoleon wrasse are reliably present on both faces.
In summer, the water temperature rises and current increases, the site becomes more challenging but visibility often peaks. In winter, calmer conditions and better light on the upper wall make Umm Gamar an excellent morning dive before the day-trip boats arrive.
