Overview

Bohemian, beloved and impossible to leave

Dahab is a small town on the Gulf of Aqaba coast of South Sinai, 90km north of Sharm el-Sheikh by road. It exists in a category entirely its own: not a resort destination, not a city, but something rarer. A place that developed a genuine character over decades and held onto it.

The town unfolds along a narrow strip of coastline between the mountains and the sea. The Mashraba promenade is the social centre: an open-air strip of dive shops, restaurants and cafes that faces the lagoon and the Saudi mountains across the water. North of the centre, the Assalah district extends into the Bedouin camps and the quieter quarters where the slow-travel community that has always defined Dahab makes its home. The pace here is difficult to explain and impossible to hurry.

The diving reputation is well-earned. The Blue Hole, 7km north of town, is a vertical shaft that plunges over 300 metres straight down. An arch passage at 50–55 metres connects the inside of the hole to the open reef wall and has claimed more than forty lives, many of them experienced divers and instructors. The wall dive outside the hole is among the best in Egypt and carries none of the same risk. The Canyon, a few minutes further along the coast road, is a different dive entirely: a winding trench through the reef, reliable marine life and calm water on most days. Both are accessible as shore dives without a boat, a rarity for sites of this calibre anywhere in the Red Sea.

One seasonal reality worth knowing: the Khamsin, a blast of dry desert air from the North Sahara, arrives on the Sinai coast between February and May and can persist for up to 50 consecutive days. Wind speeds are high and surface conditions at some sites deteriorate. It is not a reason to avoid Dahab, which has indoor climbing walls, yoga studios and a cafe culture well-suited to waiting out wind, but it shapes the calendar. The best diving and kiting conditions run from October through January, settling again once the Khamsin passes in late spring.

Freediving has grown into as significant a draw as scuba. Freedive Dahab is one of the most respected schools in the world, and the Blue Hole's long association with depth records makes it a pilgrimage site for advanced practitioners. Above water, Dahab has quietly built a second identity around rock climbing. The mountains behind town (known locally as Wadi Gnai or Wadi Wishwashy) hold over 400 documented boulder problems and more than 40 sport routes up to 7b. The Blue Lagoon to the north is one of the best kite spots in Egypt. Together, these activities attract a type of traveller the all-inclusive resorts of the northern Red Sea never see, and that Dahab would not want.

Hilton Dahab Resort
★★★★★
5-Star · Resort · Lagoon Beach

The largest and most conventional property in town, the Hilton sits on its own stretch of lagoon beach and provides the infrastructure that a larger hotel can offer: multiple pools, consistent international service and a range of dining options. 3-Star · Independent · Mashraba

A reliable mid-range choice directly on the Mashraba strip. Simple rooms, a waterfront terrace and a loyal following among divers who have been returning to Dahab for years. Less about facilities than proximity to the water, the dive sites and the centre of town.

4-Star · Resort · South Dahab

Spacious and well-maintained on the south side of town. Larger rooms than most Dahab properties, a pool facing the sea and a quieter setting that makes it a natural base for day trips to 3 Pools and the El Fanar reef. 3-Star · Eco-Camp · Assalah

The most authentic option on this list: a small camp in the northern Assalah district built in traditional Bedouin style. Stripped back and simple, but the connection to the landscape and the slow-travel community here is something no larger property in Dahab can replicate.

The Coast

Lagoons, reef and open desert

01
Mashraba Waterfront
The social and commercial heart of Dahab: a continuous strip of dive shops, open-air restaurants and cafes along the lagoon. The place to eat, organise dives and watch the Saudi mountains glow at sunset across the water.
Town Centre
02
Blue Lagoon
A beautiful natural lagoon 10–16km north of town, accessed by jeep or taxi. One of Egypt's premier kite and windsurf spots with over 300 wind days a year, also excellent snorkelling when the wind drops. The beach itself is one of the most photogenic on the Sinai coast.
Kite & Wind
03
3 Pools
Roughly 10km south of town, three shallow tidal pools set into the reef, with exceptional snorkelling and easy shore diving. One of the best independent reef experiences in South Sinai, without crowds or a boat. An Atlas pick for non-divers wanting proper reef access.

04
The Blue Hole Beach
A small stretch of shingle and rock 7km north of town, entirely dedicated to divers and freedivers. The site begins a few metres from shore. Quiet, purposeful and unlike any other beach in Sinai: nothing here but the water and the people who came for what's beneath it.
Dive Beach
05
El Fanar Lighthouse
The quieter southern end of town, past the lighthouse. A handful of small hotels, calm water and easy reef access. Less social than the Mashraba strip but the best part of Dahab for those who want peace, proximity to the water and an early night.

Things to Do

Above the water, in it, under it

Scuba Diving

The Blue Hole and the Canyon are both shore dives, no boat required. Dahab's dive centres range from large PADI operations to small, diver-run shops. The combination of site quality and shore access is almost unique in the Red Sea.

Freediving

Freedive Dahab is one of the most respected freediving schools in the world. The Blue Hole's depth record history and the challenge of the Arch have defined this discipline globally, and serious freedivers come to Dahab the way serious climbers come to Yosemite.

Rock Climbing

The mountains behind town (known locally as Wadi Gnai or Wadi Wishwashy) hold over 400 documented boulder problems and more than 40 sport routes up to 7b. A world-class destination quietly developing under the radar of the mainstream climbing community.

Kitesurfing & Windsurfing

The Blue Lagoon receives over 300 wind days per year with a consistent thermal from October to April. One of the most accessible and reliable kite spots in Egypt: flat water, warm air and a well-established school infrastructure.

Snorkelling

3 Pools, the Blue Lagoon and the Mashraba reef are all accessible from shore with fins and a mask. The reef along the Mashraba strip begins just metres from the promenade, and the ease of access is unmatched anywhere in South Sinai.

Desert Safari

The mountains behind Dahab hold Bedouin communities, hidden canyons and extraordinary stargazing far from any light pollution. Jeep and camel safaris run from town, with overnight camps for those who want to sleep under the desert sky.

Colored Canyon

One of Sinai's most dramatic geological formations: a narrow slot canyon with walls of compressed limestone in vivid bands of yellow, red, purple and white. Roughly 30 minutes by jeep. A half-day trip from Dahab and one of the most visually striking landscapes in Egypt.

Mount Sinai & St. Catherine

The summit ascent from St. Catherine's Monastery is a 2–3 hour climb, typically timed for sunrise. One of the most significant landscapes in the region, historically, spiritually and visually. An overnight trip from Dahab, roughly 2 hours by road.

Yoga & Wellness

Dahab has one of the most established yoga communities in Egypt: studios run week-long retreats and drop-in classes year-round. The slow-travel culture, the light and the mountains make it a natural draw for anyone inclined this way.
