Giftun, Police Station
Giftun Island is part of Giftun National Park, 7km offshore from Hurghada. The Police Station dive site occupies the southern and southwestern perimeter of the island, named for the former coastguard post that stood here.
The south face of Giftun drops in a series of steps and walls from the reef flat at 3–5m down to a sandy base at 20–30m. The coral coverage is among the best of the Hurghada day-trip sites: gorgonian fans at 15–20m, soft coral on the ledges, and a shelf at around 12m where Napoleon wrasse and grouper are regulars. Lionfish are common at every depth. The wall at 18–25m sees occasional barracuda schools and trevally in open water.
Visibility is good year-round, the site is on the open Red Sea side of the island, away from Hurghada's inshore turbidity. Current is variable: strongest at the southwest tip, manageable elsewhere. The combination of coral quality and wildlife density makes this the best general reef dive in the immediate Hurghada area.
A 40–50 minute speedboat from Hurghada, with numerous operators running daily trips. Most combine it with a second site to the north of the island on the same day.
