Maksour
Maksour, Arabic for 'broken', is the most technically demanding site in the Fury Shoals group, and the one with the most distinctive underwater feature: a crack in the reef floor on the north plateau that descends from entry at around 18m, with two exits at fundamentally different depths.
The north plateau itself is the base of the dive, a broad shelf at around 18m, sheltered from the current by the reef wall, where divers gather before and after the crack. The crack entry is clearly visible on the plateau floor. The passage through is narrow and enclosed, with coral growth on the walls and glassfish concentrated inside. The first exit opens at approximately 30m on the face of the reef, the passage brightens as you approach it, and you emerge onto the open reef wall in open water. Do not continue past 30m: the second exit is at approximately 50m, which is below recreational depth. It is there, technical divers reach it, but recreational divers set their turn-depth at 30m before entering the crack and enforce it absolutely.
Outside the crack, Maksour has a character the other Fury Shoals sites do not. The outer reef face drops off into depth and is exposed to current, moderate on most days, sometimes stronger. Grey reef sharks work the water column at the outer edge. Eagle rays pass along the drop-off face. The north plateau remains sheltered behind the wall and functions as a calm exit point regardless of outer conditions.
Access is by speedboat from Hamata. Wadi Lahami runs day trips but Maksour is weather and current dependent, conditions are assessed before departure.
Descend to the north plateau at 18m and locate the crack entry with your guide. Set your turn-depth at 30m and confirm it with your buddy before entering, do not rely on remembering mid-passage. Enter and follow the natural passage downward; your torch illuminates coral walls and dense glassfish. Exit at the first opening at approximately 30m into open water. Hold depth briefly on the outer face, then ascend the reef wall back to plateau level and return to the boat via the sheltered side.
An alternative second dive for divers who have done the crack. Enter at the plateau and move to the outer face, using the current to drift along the wall toward the drop-off. Grey reef sharks are reliable here. Stay above 30m on the outer face and keep the reef visible. Return to the plateau via the sheltered side and ascend.
