Careless Reef
Careless Reef is a submerged reef in the northern approaches to the Hurghada archipelago, named for the navigational complacency that sends a ship onto it every few years. It sits at the intersection of several shipping lanes, which is precisely what makes it both a hazard and a dive site.
The reef top sits at 8–12m, dropping on the eastern face to 25–30m and shelving more gently on the western face. The coral coverage is uneven: the upper structure is patchy from anchor damage and heavy current, but the ledges at 18–25m hold good gorgonian fans and soft coral. Schooling fish are the feature, barracuda work the reef edge year-round, trevally work the water column, and an occasional napoleon wrasse on the main shelf.
The dive suits divers who want a straightforward wall dive with good fish life without the crowds of Giftun. There are no famous residents and no iconic geography. It is a workmanlike Red Sea reef dive that happens to be in good shape below 15m, with the kind of fish density that comes from being slightly further from the main day-trip circuit.
Approximately 60 minutes by speedboat from Hurghada, less commonly visited than Giftun. Some operators include it as an alternative to the busier sites, usually as the second dive of a day trip or when Giftun is congested.
