Abu Gafan
Abu Gafan is described by those who know Safaga's offshore reefs as possibly the best diving in the area, a 300m narrow reef running roughly north to south, with walls dropping below 100m and plateaus at each end. What sets it apart from the other Safaga sites is the scale and density of its gorgonian sea fans, which cover the walls from 20m down in concentrations that rival anything in the Brothers or Daedalus range.
The plateaus at the north and south ends are the staging points for most dives. The north plateau sits shallower and is good for Napoleon wrasse and large grouper; the south plateau drops away faster and is where the serious wall diving happens. Black coral grows throughout the deeper sections. Turtles, barracuda, jacks and the occasional hammerhead in the blue complete a site that, despite not being on the standard liveaboard brochure, deserves to be.
